It's Important to Take The Time to Define Your Purpose (Part Two)

Green Lights Mean It’s Time to Go. It’s Time to Do the Work.

In my last post, I shared how I spent some time with Blockout Strength volleyball players talking and thinking about how to put language around their purpose and goals. I brought in resources I’ve used in the past for similar situations. I also brought in some new tools based on what I’ve learned so far through the Brian Cain Mental Performance Mastery course, as well as some things I’ve learned from his podcast and Dr Rob Gilbert’s Success Hotline.

I also wanted to use the existing environment and the screens I’ve placed in the common space of the gym to help them create and think about their goals. It was a bit more interactive and encouraged the girls to participate in a meaningful way.

I want to pass along more details about how this process unfolded in case other coaches want to do a similar exercise. If you decide use any of the prompts or reminders below, let me know how it goes!

Here are the questions and prompts I gave the girls to think through for each of their athletic goals:

  • What do you need to start right now to help you work toward your goal?

  • What do you need to stop right now that is in the way of you achieving your goal?

  • What do you need to continue to do, what are you actioning well that is helping you work toward your goal

  • List 3 gratitudes

  • List 3 wins

And below are some examples of the slides and reminders I have placed around Blockout Strength. We talked about these slides (and more) to help them determine the types of goals and purposes they need to work toward.

These slides are pretty self-explanatory. Feel free to use them (with proper credit to Blockout Academy and Blockout Strength) and create your own teaching and instruction around these various themes.

It helps our athletes to have visual images and words to connect with on a regular basis. They know every time they walk through the door they will do the Daily Self Check. So that makes it more likely that they will have a thoughtful response and be more in touch with their body, mind, and spirit. They see these other slides, too. The repetition of the visual images helps reinforce important ideas and motivations that will enable them to work hard and execute with excellence.
